Transforming your home decor styles over the years.

Living Room Décor

If you are unhappy with the way your living room looks, a  living room makeover may be just what you need! Do you ever feel bored with your living space? If so, you’re not alone! Over the years, we accumulate more and more things, and sometimes we run out of space. This can lead to everything spilling over into our living area. As a result, we are turning our once wonderfully decorated living room into a cluttered mess.

Luckily, we have plenty of mini home makeover and living room ideas that will freshen up your home without breaking the bank. You don't have to be an interior designer to try these living room decor and decluttering tips! Whether you love modern, farmhouse, or contemporary, you can have the interior design style to make you feel right at home.

Removing clutter and adding extra storage space

Before decorating your space, you want to remove anything that does not belong in your living room. For instance, if possible, remove kids’ toys, and stuff animals, and neatly store them. Having a separate space for kids' playthings is ideal, but having a dedicated room for most can be challenging. Even if you don't have a dedicated storage area, you can still easily declutter your home.

Adding storage doesn’t have to mean plastic totes and metal shelves. Instead, create storage that also coordinates with the rest of your living room furniture. For example, a Southern Pine Wood Box is perfect for storing kids’ toys and extra blankets or pillows. Not only is it a great storage solution, but it is a great furniture piece if you love farmhouse decor.

If you work from home in your living room or dining room, you may find it challenging to define this space from your living area. A simple way to start is by adding a desk with plenty of drawers for storage. Dining room tables make great desks too, just make sure to clean up after you are done working for the day. Leaving a  mess of papers and files on the dining room table can add stress and make it hard to separate work from family life.

Keep all the good and get rid of the bad

Replacing old furniture with new

After you have decluttered your living room, now it’s time to look at your furnishings and decide what you want to keep. Get rid of out-of-date curtains and light fixtures, and add beautiful accents to bring the room together.

Changing out an old rug and decorating with a stylish easy to clean rug will give the room a fresh look, and the rug will last you for years. Whether you have a small space or large space, accessories can make the living room homey and inviting.

Decorative lamps will help give the room the right lighting to make it feel cozy and comfortable. Some other room decorating ideas include creating a gallery wall to give the room a focal point or simply changing the tones or color palette in the room by swapping out accessories. If your living space has a more neutral color palette, try adding some decor with eclectic style.

It's not always necessary to get rid of your furniture to get a fresh feel. Perhaps take some of the furniture that you have and bring it back to life by sanding wood furniture down and adding fresh paint or stain. Or, add a new, fun, smaller piece of furniture, like a coffee table.

If you decide to purchase new furniture, a slipcover or upholstered sofa will give you a timeless look. Decorating with slipcover furniture will give you the flexibility to change up the look of your sofa, accent chair, swivel glider, or coordinating throw pillows.
