When should you start decorating for fall?

The most lovely thing about living in a state with changing seasons is decorating concerning the weather outside. Autumn is by far my favorite Iowa season, and with it comes so many opportunities for festive fall home decor. Finding the right decor trends for success in fall decorating is not that difficult, and can help change up your home’s look to fit 2021 home decor trends.

So when should you start putting together your fall decorations? Most start decorating their home for fall in the middle of August. For me, that’s a little bit too soon to start integrating fall trends into my living spaces. I like to enjoy the summer for as long as I can. But, as soon as I feel the crisp cool air of fall and start smelling the cozy fall scents, the fall decor ideas and planning begin!

When you decide to decorate, you should have in mind the look and decor you’re looking for, so you will be ready when it’s time to start decorating. Fall colors are a great decor inspiration!

Fall Home Decor Trends for 2021

Velvet furniture

 1. Velvet

Velvet is here, and it’s coming back with a vengeance. You will see this luxurious fabric everywhere this coming fall. From velvet sofas, pillows, to throw blankets. Velvet will add a touch of elegance no matter your decor style or preference. If you are decorating a neutral room, the rich hues of green and burgundy will help to make your room pop. No matter your home's color palette, velvet is a perfect accent.

2. Candles and Lanterns

When thinking of fall, what often comes to mind are warm drinks and oversized sweaters. Add to the warm thought and look of fall by adding fall candles and lanterns to cozy up a room.

Using candles for centerpieces, get festive by adding pumpkins and acorns, garlands, pinecones, or other natural elements to create an inviting table.

Use a fun table runner to add more color underneath your fall centerpieces, and don’t forget the matching napkins.  Fireplace mantels are a great place to use lanterns, candles, string lights, and garlands to create a homey but cheerful atmosphere.

3. Contemporary Farmhouse

Farmhouse style is one of the timeless design styles. With the mix of old and rustic and chic, and the design possibilities are endless.

If you already have a farmhouse theme in your home, add the fall hues to your slipcover sofas like burgundy and orange in throw pillows and blankets. Plaid and gingham will not only incorporate the season into your home but also give you a welcoming and pleasant feeling.

FYI: Chunky knit blankets are a hot decor trend. Use them for warmth or to add color to your bedroom or drape them over your sofa.

Eucalyptus floral wreath

5. Florals

Decorating outside the home for fall can be just as fun as decorating inside. Fall flowers can add fun pops of color to your outdoor areas. Plant eye-catching mums or place them in flower pots, and every time you see them you will think of fall!

Add in some fall porch decor by placing a fall wreath on your front door. Choose green foliage florals such as eucalyptus or pearl grass. Add a bouquet of fresh flowers from your fall garden for an eye-catching table centerpiece. Use a mason jar as a vase to add to the farmhouse theme.

When using florals, we can’t forget about using fall leaves. Break out some DIY fall decor by heading to the craft store, buying plastic leaves, and then glue leaves together, and place them around a candle for a fall centerpiece.
