3 Reasons You Should Use a Duvet Cover Instead of a Comforter

What is a Duvet?

A duvet is normally a bag that looks like a comforter, but it’s stuffed with either feather, wool (or wool fibers), other types of synthetic fibers, or synthetic fabrics. Often, they are white but do come in other colors.

What is a Duvet Cover?

A duvet cover is what you place the duvet in. Think of it like putting a pillow in a pillowcase. The duvet cover protects the duvet making it easy to maintain.

What’s the Difference Between a Duvet and a Comforter?

Duvets should not be confused with comforters. Unlike comforters, Duvets are seldom if ever stitched closed. Comforters are thick fluffy blankets that are normally sold in a 5 piece set. The set generally includes 2 decorative pillows, 2 pillow shams, and of course the comforter.

Comforter sets come in an array of patterns and designs making decorating easy and fun, especially when you throw in alternative pillows, alternative comforters, satin pillowcases, and more.

Duvets also come in a variety of patterns. Often you can purchase the matching pillow shams. Although using a comforter can be easy to decorate with there are several reasons why you should consider buying a duvet instead.

1. Duvet Covers Are Easy to Clean

use a washing machine to clean your duvet cover.

Unlike comforters, duvets do not have to be cleaned often. However, your duvet cover should be cleaned as often as you clean your sheets. Since they are not as bulky as a comforter they can be easily thrown into your washing machine.

Duvets are a great option especially for those who do not own their own washer and dryer. Comforters and duvets should be washed in a commercial or large washing machine. So having to drag your bulky comforter to the laundry mat frequently is a big turn off, at least for me it would be.

FYI: Be sure to check the tag on your duvet. Most should not be dry cleaned since the chemicals that are used can break down the fill inside the duvet.

2. Perfect for Overnight Guests

Since they are easy to clean (and they typically do not need to be dry cleaned), duvets make the perfect bedding if you have overnight guests often. Especially if you have a rental property like an Airbnb, or if you are just popular and everyone wants to spend the night at your place.

All of our overnight guests deserve fresh linens. So having a few neutral duvet covers on hand will give you the flexibility to easily change your bedding on short notice.

3. Stay Cooler in the Summer and Warmer in the Winter

use a washing machine to clean your duvet cover.

Switching out your duvet cover depending on the season is easy to do. In the summer, when we want our bedroom to be cooler changing out your duvet cover can do the trick.

Using a linen duvet cover will keep you from becoming too warm at night. Linen is a great fabric because it is breathable and it will continue to get softer the more you wash it. Using a lightweight duvet insert and removing the top sheet will also help you to be cooler.

Of course, during the winter choose a heavier fabric like a flannel duvet cover, perhaps filled with wool products or other natural fibers. They are also very soft and will keep you cozy at night. If you are still chilly at night after adding a heavy duvet cover try wearing warm comfortable pajamas.
