In 1903, while vacationing in Westport, New York, near Lake Champlain, Thomas Lee embarked on a mission to create a sturdy and comfortable outdoor chair for his family. After experimenting with various designs, he arrived at a simple yet brilliant creation using just 11 pieces of wood.
The wide armrests, slanted seat, and high back offered unmatched comfort for relaxing outdoors. It is a big change from the more decorative (and less comfy!) Victorian-style chairs of the time.
Lee shared his design with his friend, carpenter Harry Bunnell, who saw a business opportunity in producing and selling the chairs during the off-season. Bunnell's entrepreneurial spirit led him to patent the design (without crediting Lee), but the design's inherent appeal ensured its enduring popularity. The Adirondack chair has since evolved into the beloved outdoor staple we know today.
