Where do You Start When Decorating Your Home?

If you love decorating then you know how difficult it is to get started with giving your home a fresh look. Picking out paint colors, furniture, and adding accessories can be a bit overwhelming. Here are a few helpful tips on how to avoid common decorating mistakes.

1. Too Much of One Color

The Mistake: If you have a favorite color, it is so easy to grab everything you see in that color and decorate with it.

How to Avoid: You might be tempted to use your favorite color as an accent wall or to paint the whole room in that color. Instead, use a different color on the wall and accent the room with the color you love the most. Your favorite color will pop more if you use it as an accent. Use neutral color on the walls, and on upholstered furniture. Having neutral walls will help you to change your room up in the future if you want a different look.

2. A Room Lacking Light

The Mistake: A room that is dark can be depressing. Often, the problem is not having enough different types of lighting to make your space bright.

How to Avoid: Lighting is very important. It can change the mood of the room. The best way to light a room and make it cozy is by using light in layers. When you arrange your furniture make a plan according to your lifestyle on how you want to incorporate light. If you tend to read in the space you are decorating, why not add accent lamps to the area where you will be reading. This will also give you the opportunity to add color and personality to the room. When installing and choosing an overhead light pick a light with a dimmer giving you the flexibility to change the mood throughout the day.

3. Styling Dark Furniture in a Small Space

The Mistake:  Using bulky, heavy, dark furniture in a small space.

How to Avoid: If you have a small space as many do because living in an apartment it can be very challenging to decorate. Using dark, bulky furniture can actually make a room feel cramped. Use fabrics that are brighter and lighter, it will help give the room depth. When living in apartments it can be very tricky to decide on decorating your space if you move often.  When deciding on what kind of furniture to buy select a more versatile option and purchase a slipcover sofa. This will not only give you the option to change the look of your apartment, but also the ability to easily clean the fabric on your sofa.

4. Hanging Curtains Too Low

The Mistake: Hanging curtains just above the window trim or halfway between the window trim and the ceiling. It used to be the norm to hang your curtains like this, but like everything else, things have changed.

How to Avoid: Hang curtains as close to the ceiling as possible. This will not only look great but also make even the smallest of windows look huge. Of course, keep this in mind when you are purchasing your curtains to make sure you are buying the right length. You don't want your curtains to be too short. As this is another decorating mistake. Another tip to remember is to always put your curtain rod about five inches to a foot away from the window trim. That allows you to see the whole window when your curtains are open. Selecting the right width of your curtain panel is also important to make sure it drapes properly.

5. Hanging Wall Art at The Wrong Height

The Mistake:  Hanging wall art too high or low can be a bit awkward

How to Avoid: When someone walks into your room for the first time you want them to easily be able to move their eyes throughout the room. Everything should flow perfectly. New York City designer Suysel dePedro says “Visually divide the room into four sections horizontally and hang your art in the one that’s second from the top. To make sure you get the layout right, trace the frames onto paper, cut those pieces out, and tape them to the walls before you hang the art.”
