Care Instructions
Caring for your Robinia Furniture

Our Haste Garden collection is manufactured from robinia hardwood harvested in Europe and made in Poland.  It has the FSC certificate to guarantee to consumers that is comes from responsible forests that are managed to meet the social, economic and ecological needs of present and future generations.

Robinia is a compact wood, much stronger than oak, and is extremely resistant to decay.  It features a straight grain structure, the absence of knots, splits or cracks.  Robinia, known as black locust, has a high oil content which makes it one of the best woods for outdoor use.  It is a great alternative to teak which is mostly harvested from countries like Brazil and involves deforestation of the rainforests.

The color of the timber is a golden brown and this matures to a warmer, darker brown over time and exposure. If left untreated, the wood gradually changes color from the honey color of new robinia to a silver-grey patina.  After a while this silver-grey patina deteriorates to a dark-grey and greenish look. Depending on the environment, natural greying and/or weathering may become noticeable after only a few weeks. In drier climates teak or robinia wood will take several months to weather. If the wood is exposed to infrequent moisture, the color will fade slowly with minor discolorisation. In moist climates, where furniture is subjected to regular dew and sunshine, robinia furniture will weather more quickly.

Robinia does not require any special maintenance routine apart from occasional cleaning.  If left to age natural outside by being exposed to light, air and rain, then the surface of the wood will gradually change to a soft, silver-grey as the pigments in the surface layer of the wood start to fade away.  We recommend that you simply allow your furniture to weather naturally this way and maintain the the silver patina with regular, gentle cleaning with soft soap flakes dissolved in water (not detergent).  However, if a regular cleaning regime is neglected, furniture can become badly weathered (grey-black in color) or extremely dirty, in which case we recommend a cleaner and treatment designed to help restore the surface  color of the wood.  In order to maintain original condition of the furniture for as long as possible it is advised to place it under a roof or to use suitable furniture covers.

To maintain the appearance we recommend the following treatment once or twice a year: Wash with Golden Care Teak Cleaner and rinse with clean water, then rub down with fine sand paper if needed. Follow with Golden Care Teak Protector and on table tops, Golden Care Teak Shield.

We recommend Golden Care maintenance products (see below) which not only perform better than teak oil, but are also safe for the environment. Our products are completely free of solvents because they are manufactured on a water-based solution.  Since they are water-based, our products do not irritate the skin and are 100% biodegradable.

Rebecca arm

Robinia is highly resistant to the elements, however it is recommended that the furniture is covered or stored in a dry, ventilated, unheated place during the Winter months.

Fittings should be periodically checked for tightness, as they may loosen with expansion/contraction of the timber.

Cleaning

For day to day cleaning, the product should be wiped down with a damp cloth.
